Summary:
Golda and Meyer Marks had an insatiable passion for CoBrA, the avant-garde post-World War II art movement named for the primary cities of its origin, Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. The adventuresome couple, long-time residents of Miami Beach, Florida, put together an extensive collection and assembled an archive with an eye to establishing the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale as the centre for the exhibition and study of Cobra art in America. They embarked on their journey in 1962, made their first gift to the museum in 1978, and by 1989 had donated more than 1,500 works, the largest representation of this art movement in the United States. This monograph, published on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the museum's founding, is the first comprehensive publication of the Marks collection and includes essays by many notable Cobra experts and the couple's daughter Linda Nathan Marks.
