Globally praised as an 'African success story' and heavily backed by international financial institutions, development agencies and bilateral donors, the country has become an exemplar of economic and political reform for those who espouse a neoliberal model of development. The neoliberal policies and the resulting restructuring of the country have been accompanied by narratives of progress, prosperity, and modernisation and justified in the name of development. But this self-celebratory narrative, which is critiqued by many in Uganda, masks the disruptive social impact of these reforms and silences the complex and persistent crises resulting from neoliberal transformations. Bringing together a range of leading scholars on the country, this collection represents a timely contribution to the debate around the 'New Uganda', one which confronts the often sanitized and largely depoliticized accounts of the Museveni government and its proponents. Harnessing a wealth of empirical materials, the contributors offer a critical, multi-disciplinary analysis of the unprecedented political, socio-economic, cultural and ecological transformations brought about by neoliberal capitalist restructuring since the 1980s. The result is the most comprehensive collective study to date of a neoliberal market society in contemporary Africa, offering crucial insights for other countries in the global South. 505 2 $a The state, donors and development aid -- Economic restructuring and social services -- Extractivism and enclosures -- Race, culture and commoditisation. 650 0 $a Economic development $z Uganda. 650 0 $a Neoliberalism $z Uganda. 651 0 $a Uganda $x Economic conditions $y 1979- 651 0 $a Uganda $x Economic policy. 651 0 $a Uganda $x Politics and government $y 1979- 650 7 $a Economic development. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/fst00901785 650 7 $a Economic history. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/fst00901974 650 7 $a Economic policy. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/fst00902025 650 7 $a Neoliberalism. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/fst01737382 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/fst01919741 651 7 $a Uganda. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/fst01210282 648 7 $a Since 1979 $2 fast 700 1 $a Wiegratz, JoÌrg, $e editor. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2010205714 $1 http://viaf.org/viaf/286644614/ 700 1 $a Martiniello, Giuliano, $e editor. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2016167363 $1 http://viaf.org/viaf/129148449925015692465/ 700 1 $a Greco, Elisa, $e editor. $1 http://viaf.org/viaf/265397758/ 700 1 $a Wiegratz, JoÌrg, $e editor. 700 1 $a Martiniello, Giuliano, $e editor. 776 08 $i ebook version : $z 9781786991119 830 0 $a Politics and development in contemporary Africa. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191210030754.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=49A7E6C0462211E9A3F20F6897128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
