Drawing on Barthe's idea of the "shimmer" and Foucault's notion of sex as a mirage, the author shows how sex and gender can appear mirage-like on film, an effect they label shimmering. The author applies the concept of shimmering - which delineates change in its emergent form as well as the qualities of transforming bodies, images, and affects - to analyses of films that span time and genre. These include examinations of the fantastic and phantasmagorical shimmerings of sex change in Georges MeÌlieÌs's nineteenth-century trick films and Lili Elbe's 1931 autobiographical writings and photomontage in "Man into Woman." The author also explores more recent documentaries, science fiction, and pornographic and experimental films. Presenting a cinematic philosophy of transgender embodiment that demonstrates how shimmering images mediate transitioning, the author not only offers a corrective to the gender binary orientation of feminist film theory; they open up new means to understand trans ontologies aepistemologiesies as emergent, affective, and processual. 650 0 $a Transgender people in motion pictures. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007003738 650 0 $a Transsexuals in motion pictures. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004007351 650 0 $a Gender identity in motion pictures. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004008298 650 0 $a Motion pictures $x Social aspects. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85088108 650 0 $a Motion pictures $x Aesthetics. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85088085 650 7 $a Gender identity in motion pictures. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01201854 650 7 $a Motion pictures $x Aesthetics. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01027288 650 7 $a Motion pictures $x Social aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01027384 650 7 $a Transgender people in motion pictures. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01904965 650 7 $a Transsexuals in motion pictures. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01201957 650 7 $a Film. $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4017102-4 650 7 $a Geschlechterrolle $g Motiv. $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4222106-7 650 7 $a Transgender $g Motiv. $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)1170820107 776 08 $i Online version: $a Steinbock, Eliza, 1980- author. $t Shimmering images $d Durham : Duke University Press, 2019 $z 9781478004509 $w (DLC) 2018047135 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231019013719.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=4D522A6E1B1B11EAA846F92397128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
