Historians, however, have focused primarily on the Civil War of 1936-39 that followed, devoting much less attention to the parliamentary regime that preceded it. This book deals with the history and failure of the democratic polity in Spain through a detailed examination of the initiatives of its president, Niceto AlcalaÌ Zamora. As civil servant, lawyer, politician and writer, by 1931 he had become one of the most successful men of Spain. He played the leading role in the downfall of the monarchy and the inauguration of the Republic, which he served for eight months as initial prime minister and then as the first president. Stanley Payne's study argues that the failure of the Republic was not inevitable but depended on the policy choices of its president and the key party leaders. AlcalaÌ Zamora's professed goal was to 'center the Republic, ' stabilizing the new regime while avoiding extremes, but he failed altogether in this project. The Constitution of 1931 stipulated the 'double responsibility' of parliamentary government both to the president and to a voting majority. Though AlcalaÌ Zamora resisted strong efforts from the left to cancel the results of the first fully democratic elections in 1933, he subsequently used his powers recklessly, making and unmaking governments at will, refusing to permit normal functioning of parliament"--Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 505 0 $a A Monarchist Liberal (1877-1923) -- From Monarchist to Republican (1923-1931) -- The Battle over the Constitution (1931) -- The Reformist Biennium (1931-1933) -- The Elections of 1933 and the Victory of the Center and Right -- The Center Governments and the Revolutionary Insurrection of 1934 -- Government by the Center-Right (1934-1935) -- AlcalaÌ Zamora Puts an End to Parliamentary Government (1935-1936) -- The Ouster of AlcalaÌ Zamora (1936) -- Epilogue. 600 10 $a AlcalaÌ-Zamora y Torres, Niceto, $d 1877-1949. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79093022 600 10 $a AlcalaÌ-Zamora y Torres, Niceto, $d 1877-1949 $x Political and social views. 600 17 $a AlcalaÌ-Zamora y Torres, Niceto, $d 1877-1949. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00041186 651 0 $a Spain $x History $y Republic, 1931-1939. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85126105 651 0 $a Spain $x Politics and government $y 1931-1939. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85126175 650 0 $a Representative government and representation $z Spain $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Liberalism $z Spain $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Democracy $z Spain $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Presidents $z Spain $v Biography. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010108101 650 7 $a Democracy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00890077 650 7 $a Liberalism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00997183 650 7 $a Political and social views. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01353986 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919741 650 7 $a Presidents. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01075723 650 7 $a Representative government and representation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01094941 651 7 $a Spain. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204303 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a Biography. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423686 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423686 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 lcgft $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026049 830 0 $a Sussex studies in Spanish history. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2004029730 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231021024202.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20180403020436.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=04B6E036E55511E7AFB0C42A97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
