Liberec, Czech Republic, 1941), one of the most influential contemporary German artists, with an in-depth exploration of his groundbreaking paintings from the 1960s and 1970s. LuÌpertz is internationally recognized as one of the German artists who initiated a return to figurative painting during the late 1970s and 1980s. The exhibition: Markus LuÌpertz: Threads of History focuses on the early years of the artist's mature practice, reflecting his unique reconsideration of painting through the lenses of Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and, more broadly, German postwar culture. LuÌpertz, like many artists who came of age in the shadow of World War II, grappled with how he should engage with this recent past and, in particular, what he should paint. The artworks from this seminal period reveal how LuÌpertz deftly challenged the limits of painting as he struggled to reconcile the weight of history with his desire to be what he has described as "a painter without responsibilities." 520 8 $a In den mehr als 60 Jahren seines Schaffens hat Markus LuÌpertz durch die suggestive Kraft und archaische MonumentalitaÌt seiner Malweise international hoÌchste Anerkennung gefunden. 00Exhibition: The Phillips Collection / Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC, United States (27.05.-10.09.2017). 500 $a This book is published in conjunction with the exhibitions: "Markus LuÌpertz: Threads of History", Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, May 24-September 10, 2017, and "Markus LuÌpertz", The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, May 27-September 3, 2017. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references. 505 00 $t Painting in the manner of Markus LuÌpertz; or, The dandyism of existence / $r Peter Weibel -- $t Greeting / $r Ambassador Peter Wittig -- $t Directors' foreword / $r Melissa Chiu and Dorothy Kosinski -- $t Markus LuÌpertz / $r Dorothy Kosinski -- $t A stone is a hill, a hill is a stone / $r Richard Shiff -- $t "A painter without responsibilities" : Markus LuÌpertz, 1962-1975 / $r Evelyn C.
