But why is that the case? For many scholars, the policies have become more restrictive over recent decades because the asylum seekers have changed. This change is often said to be about numbers, methods of travel, and reasons for flight. In short: we are in an age of hypermobility and states cannot cope with such volumes of 'others'. This book presents an alternative view, drawing on theoretical insights from Third World Approaches to International Law, post- and decolonial studies, and presenting new research on the context of the British Empire. The text highlights the fact that since the early 1990s, for the first time, the majority of asylum seekers originate from countries outside of Europe, countries which until 30-60 years ago were under colonial rule. Policies which address asylum seekers must, the book argues, be understood not only as part of a global hypermobile present, but within the context of colonial histories. 650 0 $a Political refugees $x History. $z Western countries $x History. 650 0 $a Asylum, Right of $z Western countries $x History. 650 0 $a Postcolonialism. 650 7 $a Asylum, Right of. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00819842 650 7 $a Political refugees $x Government policy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01069687 650 7 $a Postcolonialism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01073032 651 7 $a Western countries. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01302083 650 7 $a Asylpolitik $2 gnd 650 7 $a Postkolonialismus $2 gnd 651 7 $a Europa $2 gnd 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Mayblin, Lucy. $t Asylum after empire. $d London ; New York : Roman & Littlefield International, 2017 $z 9781783486175 $w (DLC) 2017012615 830 0 $a Kilombo (Series) 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191210025322.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=CCBE5124F5D411E7B33F7C0497128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
