Her experience allows her the unique opportunity to observe children as they play and as their play changes. Starting with integration in New Orleans during the 1960s, Soileau notes, the children began to play with one another almost immediately. The children taught each other play routines, chants, jokes, jump-rope rhymes, cheers, taunts and teases--all the folk games that happen in normal play on street and playground. While the adults--the judges and attorneys, the parents, and the politicians--all haggled over which school had how many students of which race, the children began to hold hands in a circle, fall down together to "Ring around the Rosie," and tease each other in new and creative ways. Children's ability to adapt can be seen not only in their response to social change, but in how they adopt and utilize pop culture and technology. The vast technological changes of the last third of the twentieth century influenced the way children and their friends, sang, danced, played, and interacted. Louisiana Children's Folklore catalogs these changes across the decades, studying how games evolve and transform as much as they are preserved. The book includes several genres of study, oral narratives and songs, jokes and tales, and teasing formulae gleaned from mostly African American sources. Because much of the collection took place on public school playgrounds, this body of oral narratives could be of particular interest to teachers, folklorists, linguists, and parents"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Folklore $z Louisiana $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a African Americans $v Folklore $x History. 650 0 $a Children's literature, American $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Folklore and history $z Louisiana. 650 7 $a African Americans. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799558 650 7 $a Children's literature, American. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00855882 650 7 $a Folklore. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00930306 650 7 $a Folklore and history. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00930363 650 7 $a Race relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086509 651 0 $a New Orleans (La.) $x History $x History $y 20th century. 651 7 $a Louisiana. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01207035 651 7 $a Louisiana $z New Orleans. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204311 650 7 $a SOCIAL SCIENCE / Children's Studies. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a SOCIAL SCIENCE / Folklore & Mythology. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a SOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / African American Studies. $2 bisacsh 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 $a Folklore. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423784 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Soileau, Jeanne Pitre, author. $t Yo' Mama, Mary Mack, and Boudreaux and Thibodeaux $d Jackson : University Press of Mississippi, [2017] $z 9781496810410 $w (DLC) 2016042774 830 0 $a Folklore studies in a multicultural world. 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20170203032534.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=A560FCE8E9E711E69A6025A3DAD10320 994 $a 92 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
