This is the first full-length study to focus instead on those members who do advocate for these groups and when and why they do so. Katrina F. McNally develops the concept of an 'advocacy window' that develops as members of Congress consider incorporating disadvantaged group advocacy into their legislative portfolios. Using new data, she analyzes the impact of constituency factors, personal demographics, and institutional characteristics on the likelihood that members of the Senate or House of Representatives will decide to cultivate a reputation as a disadvantaged group advocate. By comparing legislative activism across different disadvantaged groups rather than focusing on one group in isolation, this study provides fresh insight into the tradeoffs members face as they consider taking up issues important to different groups." -- $c Provided by publisher. 610 10 $a United States. $b Congress 610 17 $a United States. $b Congress $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00529490 650 0 $a Representative government and representation $z United States. 650 0 $a Legislators $z United States $x Public opinion. 650 0 $a People with social disabilities $x Political activity $z United States. 650 0 $a Minorities $x Political activity $z United States. 651 0 $a United States $x Social policy. 651 0 $a United States $x Politics and government. 650 6 $a Gouvernement representatif $z Etats-Unis. 650 6 $a Parlementaires $z Etats-Unis $x Opinion publique. 650 6 $a Personnes socialement defavorisees $x Activite politique $z Etats-Unis. 650 6 $a Minorites $x Activite politique $z Etats-Unis. 651 6 $a Etats-Unis $x Politique sociale. 651 6 $a Etats-Unis $x Politique et gouvernement. 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE / American Government / General. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Legislators $x Public opinion. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00995866 650 7 $a Minorities $x Political activity. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01023202 650 7 $a People with social disabilities $x Political activity. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01057457 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919741 650 7 $a Representative government and representation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01094941 650 7 $a Social policy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01122738 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 776 08 $i Online version: $a McNally, Katrina F. $t Representing the disadvantaged $d Cambridge ; New York, NY : Cambridge University Press, 2021 $z 9781108974172 $w (DLC) 2021034852 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240417024244.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=9CD4FE54FC8011EE9ABF7B513DECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
