These are retables, sometimes with painted side panels, the central section filled not only with narrative sculpture, but also with all sorts of trinkets and hand-worked textiles. Adornments include relics, wax medallions, gemstones set in silver, pilgrimage souvenirs, parchment banderoles, flowers made from textiles with silk thread, semi-precious stones, pearls and quilling (a decorative technique using rolled paper). The ensemble is an impressive and one-of-a-kind display and presents as an intoxicating garden. In this essay the exceptional heritage of such Enclosed Gardens is interpreted from a range of approaches. The Enclosed Garden is studied as a symbol of paradise and mystical union, as the sanctuary of interiority, as the sublimation of the sensorium (in particular the sense of smell), as a typical gendered product, and as a centre of psycho-energetic creative processes.--Back cover. 650 0 $a Altarpieces $z Benelux countries. 650 0 $a Altarpieces $z Mechelen. $z Mechelen. 650 0 $a Art $z Benelux countries $x Themes, motives. 650 0 $a Christian art and symbolism $z Benelux countries. 650 0 $a Sex role in art. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh96012003 650 0 $a Nature in art. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012103 650 0 $a Paradise in art. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85097752 650 4 $a Enclosed gardens. 650 7 $a Altarpieces. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00806047 650 7 $a Art $x Themes, motives. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00815381 650 7 $a Christian art and symbolism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00858904 650 7 $a Nature in art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01034679 650 7 $a Paradise in art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01052838 650 7 $a Sex role in art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01114647 651 7 $a Belgium $z Mechelen. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01209313 651 7 $a Benelux countries. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01242373 650 07 $a Hortus conclusus. $0 (DE-588)4729180-1 $2 gnd 650 07 $a ParadiesgaÌrtlein. $0 (DE-588)7662647-7 $2 gnd 650 07 $a Hortus conclusus (Motiv) $0 (DE-588)7662650-7 $2 gnd 651 7 $a Niederlande. $0 (DE-588)4042203-3 $2 gnd 830 0 $a Studies in iconology ; $v 2. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2014160591 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231019015029.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=B3A1E8BEEC6911E7AF65C16E97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
