In 1932, Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur explained that "the United States has had no treaty relations with any of the aborigines of Alaska nor have they been recognized as the independent tribes with a government of their own. The individual native has always and everywhere in Alaska been subject to the white man's law, both Federal and territorial, civil and criminal." As a continuation of that policy, in 1971 when Congress settled Alaska Native land claims by enacting the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, at the request of Native leaders, it required Alaska Natives to incorporate business corporations under the laws of the State of Alaska that then were conveyed land in fee title. But today the Secretary of the Interior and those same Native leaders are adamant that there are more than two hundred federally-recognized tribes in Alaska whose Alaska Native members are "sovereign" and whose governing bodies possess "inherent" governmental authority. Tribal Sovereignty in Alaska tells the story of that dramatic reversal of federal Indian policy in exhaustively researched detail"-- $c Provided by publisher. 610 10 $a United States. $t Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. 630 07 $a Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (United States) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01363261 650 0 $a Alaska Natives $x Legal status, laws, etc. 650 0 $a Alaska Natives $x Government relations. 650 0 $a Alaska Natives $x Politics and government. 650 0 $a Alaska Native corporations $x Law and legislation $z United States. 650 0 $a Federally recognized Indian tribes $z United States. 650 6 $a Autochtones de l'Alaska $x Relations avec l'Etat. 650 6 $a Federally recognized Indian tribes. 650 7 $a Alaska Native corporations $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst02033329 650 7 $a Federally recognized Indian tribes. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00922373 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 653 $a Indigenous sovereignty 776 08 $i Online version: $a Mitchell, Donald, 1947 January 23- $t Tribal sovereignty in Alaska $d Durham, North Carolina : Carolina Academic Press, LLC, [2021] $z 9781531022259 $w (DLC) 2021041373 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231018020644.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=069ADD9EC48911EDAC2163E35EECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
