Free love, common-law and transient marriages, queer relations, and single motherhood were among the sweeping changes that altered the character of everyday life and challenged traditional Victorian beliefs about courtship, love, and marriage. Hartman narrates the story of this radical social transformation against the grain of the prevailing century-old argument about the crisis of the black family. In wrestling with the question of what a free life is, many young black women created forms of intimacy and kinship that were indifferent to the dictates of respectability. They cleaved to and cast off lovers, exchanged sex to subsist, and revised the meaning of marriage. Longing and desire fueled their experiments in how to live. They refused to labor like slaves or to accept degrading conditions of work. Beautifully written and deeply researched, Wayward Lives re-creates the experience of young urban black women who desired an existence qualitatively different than the one that had been scripted for them-domestic service, second-class citizenship, and respectable poverty-and whose intimate revolution was apprehended as crime and pathology. 538 $a Mode of access: World Wide Web. 650 0 $a African American young women $x Social conditions $y 19th century. 650 0 $a African American young women $x Social conditions $y 20th century. 650 0 $a African American young women $x History. $x History. 650 0 $a Single women $z United States $x Social conditions $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Single women $z United States $x Social conditions $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Urban women $z United States $x Social conditions $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Urban women $z United States $x Social conditions $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Sex customs $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a Prostitution $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a Man-woman relationships. 700 1 $a Johnson, Allyson. $4 nrt 710 2 $a hoopla digital. 856 40 $u https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/12350358?utm_source=MARC $z Instantly available on hoopla. 856 42 $z Cover image $u https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/rcb_9781684418749_180.jpeg 941 $a 1 952 $l CDPF771 $d 20200403012034.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=D145905C757211EA9A5BA35697128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
