But this seemingly harmless exercise ended in catastrophe. Commander AlexanderSlidell Mackenzie came ashore saying he had narrowly prevented a mutiny that would have left him and his officers dead. Some of the thwarted mutineers were being held under guard, but three had been hanged: Boatswain's Mate Samuel Cromwell, Seaman ElishaSmall, and Acting Midshipman Philip Spencer, whose father was the secretary of war, John Spencer. Eighteen-year-old Philip Spencer, according to Mackenzie, had been the ringleader who encouraged the crew to seize the ship and become pirates, raping and pillaging their way across the old Spanish Main. And while the young man might have been a rebel fascinated by pirates, it soon became clear the order that condemned the three men had no legal basis. And worse, that perhaps a mutiny had never really occurred, and that the ship might instead have been seized by a creeping hysteria that ended in the sacrifice of three innocents. Months of accusations and counteraccusations were followed by a highly public court martial which put Mackenzie on trial for his life, and a storm of anti-Navy sentiment drew the attention of the leading writers of the day (Washington Irving thought Mackenzie a hero; James Fenimore Cooper damned him with a ferocity that still stings). But some good did come out of it: public disgust with Mackenzie's training cruise gave birth to Annapolis, the place that within a century, would produce the greatest navy the world had ever known. Vividly told and filled with tense action based on court martial transcripts, Snow's masterly account of this all-but-forgotten episode is naval history at its finest"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Somers Mutiny, 1842. 610 10 $a United States. $b Navy $x History. $9 76793 610 20 $a Somers (Brig : 1842-1846) 600 10 $a Mackenzie, Alexander Slidell, $d 1803-1848. 600 10 $a Spencer, Philip, $d 1824-1842. 600 10 $a Cromwell, Samuel, $d -1842. 600 10 $a Small, Elijah, $d -1842. 610 10 $a United States. $b Court-martial (Mackenzie : 1843) $b Court-martial (Mackenzie : 1843) 600 10 $a Mackenzie, Alexander Slidell, $d 1803-1848 $x Trials, litigation, etc. 650 0 $a Courts-martial and courts of inquiry $z New York. $z New York. 650 0 $a Trials (Mutiny) $z New York. $z New York. 776 08 $i Online version: 776 08 $a Snow, Richard, 1947- $t Sailing the graveyard sea $b First Scribner hardcover edition. $d New York : Scribner, 2023 $z 9781982185466 $w (DLC) 2023012688 941 $a 20 952 $l SFPH074 $d 20240716042416.0 952 $l GOPG641 $d 20240710064741.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240517012605.0 952 $l VKPE334 $d 20240323014000.0 952 $l UJPE911 $d 20240309010756.0 952 $l RZPE145 $d 20240309010617.0 952 $l FYPI314 $d 20240302011749.0 952 $l YXPB162 $d 20240220011256.0 952 $l VBPC034 $d 20240109010545.0 952 $l SIPD314 $d 20240106011145.0 952 $l CYPF706 $d 20240104010106.0 952 $l ZLPD437 $d 20240103134035.0 952 $l KOPC446 $d 20231214012851.0 952 $l DBPE173 $d 20231212010444.0 952 $l BAPH771 $d 20231212010138.0 952 $l GFPE771 $d 20231206013406.0 952 $l XBPE737 $d 20231205013622.0 952 $l SAPG074 $d 20231205011154.0 952 $l XXPH787 $d 20231202013727.0 952 $l TCPG826 $d 20231202010455.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=B9E9090E883B11EEBC107B3452ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
