The book was designed and produced in San Francisco by the staff - Brian Ferrett, Megan Gibes, Chris Godeck, Jeffrey Raymond, Blake Riley, and Rochelle Youk - with additional assistance from Rolph Blythe, Sarah Lariviere, Alice Lin, and from Chris Dunlap who initiated the project. The typeface is Perpetua, designed by Eric Gill and cast on site in Monotype, with Stephenson & Blake Perpetua, Perpetua Titling, and Castellar drawn from the press' collection of historic metal types and handset for display. ... The type has been printed by letterpress on Zerkall 120 gsm smooth Frankfurt on a Miller TW two-cylinder press. The six engravings were carved from boxwood and maple blocks by Richard Wagener in summer and early fall 2019 in Petaluma, California and reproduced with a Thomson Laureate platen press and a Vandercook Universal III cylinder press on Zerkall 170 gsm mould-made. Although the Western Flyer image is composed of three registered woodblocks, background tints for four marine specimens were printed from polymer plates. The edition is limited to 250 copies for sale, signed by the artist. Copies 1-40 are bound in quarter coral leather with cloth sides and accompanied by a signed, stand-alone 3-color woodblock print ... These copies are presented in artisanal boxes designed and fabricated by Jonathan Anzalone in San Francisco from Monterey cypress and from old-growth Douglas fir planks salvaged from the famed purse-seiner [that is, The Western Flyer]. The box lids were designed to preserve the distinctive iron hobnail holes of the boat's original boards. 25 variant leather-bound copies are presented in handmade slipcases, numbered 41-65. The balance of the edition is bound in striated pearlescent cloth with imprinted paper sides. Label veneers for the edition were split from the same preserved Western Flyer plank material. The "Voyage of the Western Flyer" map and the line art for the veneers were designed and drawn by Martin Machado. In addition to 26 lettered hors commerce copies of the standard Limited edition reserved for complimentary distribution to participants in the project, there are 5 printer's proofs of the Deluxe edition with presentation box, numbered I-V."--Colophon. 500 $a Special Collections has a regular edition copy, number 165, signed by the artist.
