520 $a The essay film by German director Harun Farocki resurrects film footage shot by Rudolf Breslauer, a temporary inmate of the Westerbork Dutch transit camp for Jews waiting for transportation to "the East" during WWII. The footage was commissioned by the camp's SS commandant. The film documents how well they were treated, but these positive images are constantly interrogated by the use of titles. The vision of camp inmates peacefully boarding trains is intercut with titles asking: Do they know where they are going? Are they optimistic because, if they are being filmed, they can't be going anywhere bad? None knew what Auschwitz was.
