In reality, airpower alone sometimes does win battles, but the costs can be high and the long-term consequences may fall short of what decision-makers had in mind. In Bombs without Boots, long-time U.S. intelligence analyst Anthony Schinella assesses the military operations and postconflict outcomes in five post-Cold War cases in which the United States and/or its allies used airpower to "solve" military problems: Bosnia in 1995, Kosovo in 1999, Afghanistan in 2001, Lebanon in 2006, and Libya in 2011. In each of these cases, airpower helped achieve the immediate objective, but the long-term outcomes often diverged significantly from the original intent of policymakers. Schinella concludes that the combination of airpower and local ground forces can sometimes be effective, but decision-makers should carefully consider the adversary, the proxy being supported, and the potential postconflict commitments before sending planes, drones, or missiles aloft--back cover. 611 27 $a Afghan War (2001-) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01695175 611 27 $a Civil War (Libya : 2011-) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01907467 611 27 $a Israeli Intervention in Lebanon (1996) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01353435 611 27 $a Kosovo War (Serbia : 1998-1999) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01715454 611 27 $a Operation Allied Force (1999) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01046295 611 27 $a Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01754981 611 27 $a Operation Odyssey Dawn (2011) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01896210 611 27 $a Operation Unified Protector (2011) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01896289 611 27 $a Yugoslav War (1991-1995) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01183774 650 0 $a Bombing, Aerial $z Bosnia and Herzegovina. 650 0 $a Bombing, Aerial $z Afghanistan. 650 0 $a Bombing, Aerial $z Kosovo (Republic) 650 0 $a Bombing, Aerial $z Lebanon. 650 0 $a Bombing, Aerial $z Libya. 650 0 $a Afghan War, 2001- $x Aerial operations. 650 0 $a Kosovo War, 1998-1999 $x Aerial operations. 650 0 $a Yugoslav War, 1991-1995 $x Aerial operations. 651 0 $a Libya $x Campaigns. $y Civil War, 2011- $x Campaigns. 651 0 $a Lebanon $x History $y Israeli intervention, 1996. 650 0 $a Operation Deliberate Force, 1995 650 0 $a Operation Allied Force, 1999. 650 0 $a Operation Enduring Freedom, 2001- 650 0 $a Operation Change of Direction 11, 2006 650 0 $a Operation Odyssey Dawn, 2011. 650 0 $a Operation Unified Protector, 2011. 710 2 $a Brookings Institution, $e issuer of work. 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240619012035.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20190502024115.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=347AA55E550D11E9884C074097128E48 994 $a C0 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
