Summary:
Pythias, a liberal Athenian, believes all men are brothers and is condemned to death by tyrannical Dionysus, who believes this view is dangerous. Dionysus allows Pythias to return to Athens to visit his ailing wife with the understanding that he will return to face punishment. Damon, Pythias's friend, volunteers to be a hostage until Pythias's return. Dionysus does not expect Pythias to return, but when Pythias does, Dionysus is left questioning his philosophical views.
