Summary:
Barenboim explains Beethoven's unique characteristics in his symphonies and the symphonic character of his music. He also demonstrates how Beethoven overrode the boundaries of the piano to bring out of the instrument a new range of music expression. Barenboim uses excerpts from the Pastoral sonata, op. 28 and the Hammerklavier. The orchestra performs the 1st movement of Symphony no. 8.
