Summary:
Barenboim discusses and demonstrates how Beethoven expressed impatience with his patrons' social graces and society's formality through his transformation of the most conventional musical form of the time, the minuet, into the scherzo, in which he retained the rhythm but used the movement in entirely new and revolutionary ways.
