Summary:
Documents the artists, writers, musicians, and celebrities that have emerged from the legendary residence in the middle of New York. Includes archival footage, interviews, narrative sequences, and the people who have lived and created in the American cultural icon, the Chelsea Hotel.
"Abel Ferrara's first documentary CHELSEA ON THE ROCKS is an absorbing, freewheeling personal journey inside the walls and the mythical history of Manhattan's most celebrated bohemian landmark. The hotel has been called home to luminaries and icons like Mark Twain, Bob Dylan, Tennessee Williams, Stanley Kubrick, Milos Forman, Julian Schnabel, Sid Vicious, Dee Dee Ramone and Arthur Miller among others. New York's most enduring artist asylym came under attack when new management ousted long time Chelsea steward Stanley Bard in preparation for a commercial makeover. Proverbial New Yorker and Chelsea Hotel resident Ferrara (KING OF NEW YORK, BAD LIEUTENANT) set out to capture the inglorious splendor of the famed haunt before its unique spirit is lost forever. The film combined rare archival footage, Ferrara's enigmatic interview style and dramatic re-enactments summoning ghosts of the Chelsea's past -- Nancy Spungen and Sid Vicious, Janis Joplin -- performed by Bijou Phillips, Adam Goldberg, Giancarlo Esposito, and Grace Jones. Trolling the fabled halls, CHELSEA ON THE ROCKS is shot with an infectious bravado, gallows humor and a warm hard-knock nostalgia to match its uniquely beloved subject. Ferrara's documentary feature includes interviews with residents past and present such as Milos Forman, Ethan Hawke, Dennis Hopper, R. Crumb, Joe Andoe and Donald Baechler." -- Container
