Summary:
"Current discourses treat bilingualism as economic capital and the key to success on the job market. Drawing on an ethnographic study of the economic appropriation of local bilingualism in the tourism industry of the town of Murten, situated at the French-German language border in Switzerland, Larissa S. Schedel empirically examines these discourses. From a critical sociolinguistic perspective, she investigates the different formulations of the local linguistic situation in touristic marketing discourses as well as the differing relevance of bilingual competencies for access to the touristic job market and the various performances of bilingualism in guided tours. The analysis shows the variable (de)construction of geopolitical language borders as well as social categories of speakers. This study offers new perspectives on the dynamic of the political economy of language(s) and the legitimacy of their speakers in the context of the 'New Economy'"--Provided by publisher.
