In early October, 2001, Dom DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky drove 1,300 miles to visit with their friend and beloved teammate, Ted Williams, who was dying. These three men, and a fourth, Bobby Doerr, had been friends for more than sixty years, and were the key players in a remarkable Boston Red Sox team. This is the story of four men who made the passage from sports icons when they were young and seemingly indestructible to a time when they had to deal with the vulnerabilities of growing older.
