Summary:
Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon keeps an exceptional drawing by Albrecht Dürer studying a piece of drapery. This meticulous study reveals how the suppleness of a fabric lends itself to an infinity of folds, underlined by the play of shadows and lights. How is a drapery set up? Why does this motif continue to this day? How to explain its power of fascination? These are the questions that this book intends to answer. The reader is invited to enter the workshops of the most remarkable artists, such as Nicolas Poussin, Gustave Moreau or Ingres, to enter the "fabric" of drapery and to be as close as possible to the artistic gesture, to follow the stages of making a drapery, to discover the singular practices of the artists. The exhibition is presented from November 30, 2019 to March 8, 2020 at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. A reference work, richly illustrated, whose very in-depth comment sweeps all the periods of the history of Western art from the Renaissance to the second half of the 20th century.
