Lt. Joe Leaphorn's homicide case had an eyewitness, of sorts: a blind woman named Listening Woman. She had been diagnosing a sick old man, who wouldn't confide in her. She had been listening to the earth, which told her the old man needed to receive the Mountain Way Cant and the Black Rain Ceremony to cure him of his secret problem. But before Listening Woman could communicate her diagnosis, someone had murdered the old Navajo, bludgeoned him to death with a pistol.
