Notes:
Statement of responsibility from colophon. "Touch is an accordion of shallow boxes connected with Japanese piano hinges. The design features botanical contact printed paper that was folded and half submerged with spiral eucalyptus, Echinacea leaves, and hydrangea flowers. Each of the eight panels has a different phase of the moon cut out of vellum and paper printed with eucalyptus. The paper moons are strung with invisible thread so they float in the boxes, free to turn and create shadows. This design illustrates the poem's imagery of moonshine, passing of time, and inevitability. The movement of the moons and the flexibility of the piano hinge also give a sensory quality to the piece. The text is written in white gouache that slowly mixes with metallic pink as if the rising moon is casting pink light on the text. This is a one-of-a-kind."--Artist's statement. "The artists' books "Touch" and "Release of the Dead" are components of Christine Manwiller's final Iowa Center for the Book MFA thesis project: "Investigations in Botanical Contact Printing (Where the Light Meets the Trees; Thirteen Variations)." This project explores the process of botanical contact printing on paper, culminating in a series of thirteen handmade artist books. Each of the thirteen books contains a poem from a collection of thirteen poems written by Alice Yousef. Every element of the book: materials, structure, calligraphed text, type of botanical contact print, sometimes the enclosure, responds to the poem, providing a visual interpretation of the written word. The completely different approaches to binding structure in this series intend to not only visually support the text, but also explore the possibilities of botanical contact print imagery in the book form."--Artists' statement.
