Summary:
In a quiet town in northern Moravia in the 1920's, the town veterinarian, an ambitious but weak man, and his older, wealthy and possessive wife adopt an attractive innocent young girl the wife has brought into their home as a servant/companion. He and the girl fall in love but he refuses to acknowlege the situation and leaves the two women behind while he pursues professional duties in the city.
