Summary:
"Theology is one of the oldest academic disciplines. In fact, many universities in different parts of the world were founded as institutions of theological studies. Yet, today, theology faces multiple challenges related to its current and future place in higher education, as well as in the Churches and society at large: some might question its standing as an academic discipline on the one hand, or its contribution to the life of the Church on the other. Low enrollment is a further challenge that has an impact on the funding of departments and schools. These theological institutions might also struggle to define their mission and profile in a plural world, in the encounter with other denominations and religions, or secular worldviews. In some places. these challenges have led to the closing of departments of theology at public universities, or to their transformation into schools of religious studies. Both scholars and students of theology and administrators in higher education ask themselves if theology will be able to maintain its place in institutions of higher education and how it will (re-)define its role. This situation calls for renewed reflection on theology as an academic discipline and as a field of study with its specific methodologies and contributions to academic scholarship, the Church and society at large. This issue of Concilium aims to advance these reflections, both regarding the institutional nature and place of theology in higher education, and its methodologies, epistemologies, and interdisciplinary interactions with other fields of studies within the limits and possibilities of the institutions of higher education. Thus, the goal of this issue is not to discuss theology in general but specifically as a discipline within the institutional context of higher education."--Editorial, page 7.
