With her husband's corpse in the back of her wagon, Karoline Olsen must take him across the state of Iowa for his burial. Traveling in the humid summer heat, she has only blocks of ice to keep him from decaying. Along the way, Karoline assesses her life and her survival through drought, death, and a difficult marriage.
