The work contributes to our understanding of both the prevalence and importance of apocrypha in vernacular preaching, by assessing various preaching texts from Continental and Anglo-Saxon Latin homiliaries, as well as vernacular collections like the Vercelli Book, the Blickling Book, Ãlfric's Catholic Homilies and other manuscripts from the tenth through twelfth centuries. Vernacular sermons were part of a media ecology that included Old English poetry, legal documents, liturgical materials, and visual arts. Situating Old English preaching within this network establishes the range of contexts, purposes, and uses of apocrypha for diverse groups in Anglo-Saxon society: cloistered religious, secular clergy, and laity, including both men and women. Apocryphal narratives did not merely survive on the margins of culture, but thrived at the heart of mainstream Anglo-Saxon Christianity."-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Apocryphal books $x History $z England $x History $y To 1500. 650 0 $a Sermons, English (Old) $x History and criticism. 651 0 $a England $x Church history $y 449-1066. 650 7 $a Apocryphal books. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00811408 650 7 $a Sermons, English (Old) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01113256 651 7 $a England. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01219920 648 7 $a To 1500 $2 fast 655 7 $a Church history. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411629 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 830 0 $a Toronto Anglo-Saxon series ; $v 30. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20190212014933.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=FED36AD6E96D11E8978F920F97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
