Sheng-mei Ma examines the work of nineteenth-century "Sinophobic" American writers, such as Bret Harte, Jack London, and Frank Norris, and twentieth-century "Sinophiliac" authors, such as John Steinbeck and Philip K. Dick, as well as the movies Crazy Rich Asians and Disney's Mulan and a host of contemporary Chinese authors, to illuminate how cultural stereotypes have swung from fearmongering to an overcompensating exultation of everything Asian. Within this framework Ma employs the Taoist principle of yin and yang to illuminate how roles of the once-dominant American hegemony-the yang-and the once-declining Asian civilization-the yin-are now, in the twenty-first century, turned upside down as China rises to write its side of the story, particularly through the soft power of television and media streamed worldwide"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a American literature $y 20th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a American literature $y 19th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Chinese in literature. 650 0 $a Stereotypes (Social psychology) in literature. 650 0 $a Mass media and culture $z China. 651 0 $a China $x Foreign relations $y 21st century. 651 0 $a China $x Civilization $y 21st century. 650 6 $a LitteÌrature ameÌricaine $y 20e sieÌcle $x Histoire et critique. 650 6 $a LitteÌrature ameÌricaine $y 19e sieÌcle $x Histoire et critique. 650 6 $a SteÌreÌotypes dans la litteÌrature. 650 6 $a MeÌdias et culture $z Chine. 651 6 $a Chine $x Relations exteÌrieures $y 21e sieÌcle. 651 6 $a Chine $x Civilisation $y 21e sieÌcle. 650 7 $a LITERARY CRITICISM / Modern / 20th Century. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a American literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00807113 650 7 $a Chinese in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00857382 650 7 $a Civilization. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00862898 650 7 $a Diplomatic relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 $a Mass media and culture. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01011339 650 7 $a Stereotypes (Social psychology) in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01431525 651 7 $a China. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01206073 648 7 $a 1800-2099 $2 fast 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 $a Literary criticism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01986215 655 7 $a Literary criticism. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Critiques litteÌraires. $2 rvmgf 776 08 $i Online version: $a Ma, Sheng-mei. $t Tao of S $d Columbia : University of South Carolina Press, 2022 $z 9781643363080 $w (DLC) 2021061653 830 0 $a East-West cultural encounters in literature & cultural studies. 941 $a 2 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20230121010213.0 952 $l UQAX771 $d 20221012010831.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=3116459249F311ED9CAF447533ECA4DB 994 $a C0 $b JIDInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
