It was a time of dire food scarcity, escalating tensions between shoppers and merchants, an upsurge of urban guerrilla violence, and relentless repression of dissent by the authorities. The French collaborationist government at Vichy saw the demonstration as a crime against the State. For the German occupiers, it was "terrorism." For the French Communist party activists who staged the event and participated in it, it was an act of people's justice. What ultimately became known as the "Buci affair" had tragic consequences for the demonstrators and far-reaching ramifications for the underground communist resistance. How did a relatively obscure incident become a short-lived cause ceÌleÌbre? Why did it mobilize the French police, the courts, and the German military authorities but fail to mobilize the public? How did the party and party activists use gender to shape the event and perceptions of it? This close-up of a single episode reveals the motivations of the committed women and men who orchestrated it, and the visible but unseen moving parts of the "above-ground underground." Today Sardines Are Not For Sale is the product of a privileged moment when it was possible to confront written sources-newly accessible police and court records--with the oral testimony of surviving participants"-- $c Provided by publisher. 610 20 $a Parti communiste français. 610 27 $a Parti communiste français. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00549705 651 0 $a Paris (France) $x History $y 1940-1944. 650 0 $a Demonstrations $z Paris $z Paris $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Housewives $x Political activity $z Paris. $z Paris. 650 0 $a World War, 1939-1945 $x Food supply $z Paris. $z Paris. 650 0 $a World War, 1939-1945 $x Underground movements $z Paris. $z Paris. 650 0 $a Collective memory $z Paris. $z Paris. 651 0 $a France $x History $y German occupation, 1940-1945. 650 7 $a Collective memory. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01739814 650 7 $a Demonstrations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00890222 650 7 $a Food supply. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00931196 650 7 $a Housewives $x Political activity. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00962226 650 7 $a Underground movements, War. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01355184 651 7 $a France. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204289 651 7 $a France $z Paris. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205283 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Schwartz, Paula, $t Today sardines are not for sale $d New York : Oxford University Press, 2020. $z 9780190681562 $w (DLC) 2019043029 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20200806022920.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=68CF5668BC2911EAAC3CDF0297128E48 994 $a 92 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
