Traveling between the courts and religious centers of the region, these pilgrim-monks played a powerful role in this proto-cosmopolitanism, promulgating what came to be known as the International Buddhist Art Style. In Buddhist Pilgrim-Monks as Agents of Cultural and Artistic Transmission, Dorothy C. Wong argues that the visual expression found in this robust new art style arose alongside the ascendant theory of the Buddhist state, and directly influenced it. Aided by lavish illustrations, Wong's book shows that the visual language transmitted and circulated by these pilgrim-monks served as a key agent in shaping the cultural landscape of Northeast Asia. This is the first major study of the vital role played by Buddhist pilgrim-monks in conveying the notions of Buddhist kingship via artistic communication. Wong's interdisciplinary analysis will attract scholars in Asian art history and religious studies. 546 $a In English. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 300-334) and index. 505 0 $a Xuanzang and His Fellow Buddhist Pilgrims and Missionaries, ca. 645-710 -- Xuanzang and His Image-Making Activities: Mass Reproduction and Materiality in Buddhism -- Genesis of the Bejweled Buddha in Earth-Touching Gesture: Wu Zhao and Her Monk-Advisers -- Doji and His Contemporaries, ca. 710-45 -- Doji's Activities in China and Japan -- The Rebuilding of Daianji -- Completion of Todaiji and Jianzhen's Travels to Japan, ca. 745-70 -- The Art of Avatamsaka Buddhism at the Courts of Wu Zhao and Shomu/Komyo -- Jianzhen's Travels to Japan and the Building of Toshodaiji. 650 0 $a Buddhist art $z East Asia. 650 0 $a Buddhist monks $z East Asia. 650 0 $a Arts, East Asian $x Buddhist influences. 650 0 $a Buddhism $z East Asia $x History. 650 7 $a Buddhist monks. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00840233 650 7 $a Buddhism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00840028 650 7 $a Buddhist art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01727577 650 7 $a Civilization $x Buddhist influences. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01352340 651 0 $a East Asia $x Buddhist influences. $x Buddhist influences. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh97008848 651 7 $a East Asia. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01243628 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191213022031.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=EC2169B81D7611EA83B92C1397128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
