In recent years, the protected status of affirmative action has become uncertain, as legal challenges chip away at its foundations. This book looks through a sociological lens at both the history of affirmative action and its increasingly tenuous future. J. Scott Carter and Cameron D. Lippard first survey how and why so-called "colorblind" rhetoric was originally used to frame affirmative action and promote a political ideology. The authors then provide detailed examinations of a host of recent Supreme Court cases that have sought to threaten or undermine it. Carter and Lippard analyze why the arguments of these challengers have successfully influenced widespread changes in attitude toward affirmative action, concluding that the discourse and arguments over these policies are yet more unfortunate manifestations of the quest to preserve the racial status quo in the United States. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 203-214) and index. 505 0 $a Introduction -- Affirmative action and higher education -- Race, the affirmative action debate, education and past court cases -- Who is fighting the fight? -- Case study 1: The Gratz/Grutter Supreme Court Cases against the University of Michigan -- Case study 2: The Fisher Supreme Court Cases against the University of Texas at Austin -- Conclusions. 650 0 $a Minority college students $x Recruiting $z United States. 650 0 $a Universities and colleges $z United States $x Admission. 650 0 $a Affirmative action programs in education $z United States. 650 7 $a Affirmative action programs in education. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01201993 650 7 $a Minority college students $x Recruiting. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01023334 650 7 $a Universities and colleges $x Admission. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01161621 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11931371 $a Universites $x Admission $0 (FrPBN)11931371 $z Etats-Unis. $2 ram 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11931371 $a Minorites $x Recrutement $0 (FrPBN)13516372 $x Recrutement $0 (FrPBN)11931371 $z Etats-Unis. $2 ram 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11931371 $a Programmes d'action positive en education $0 (FrPBN)11931371 $z Etats-Unis. $2 ram 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11931371 $a Discrimination dans l'enseignement superieur $0 (FrPBN)11931371 $z Etats-Unis. $2 ram 700 1 $a Lippard, Cameron D., $e author. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Carter, J.
