Although we assume that the worship of goddesses implies the celebration of so-called female power, we overlook how the development of such practices of devotion occurred within a highly patriarchal society that subjugated women in everyday life. Addressing this oversight, Mutating Goddesses traces the shifting fortunes of four goddesses--ManasÄ, Caá¹á¸Ä«, á¹¢aá¹£á¹hÄ«, and Laká¹£mÄ«--and their mutation within the goddess-invested tradition of Bengal's Hinduism. It uses the vibrant laukika archive comprising religious practices and beliefs that, unlike the á¹£Ästrik perspective, have not been affected by the emergence and consolidation of the male Brahman and the Sanskrit language. Using narratives such as kathÄs, laukika bratakathÄs, and maá¹ galkÄbyas, Sengupta explores the period between the fifteenth and twentieth centuries and investigates the correlation of gender, caste, and class in the sanctioning of female subjectivities through goddess formation. Thus, she excavates the multiple and layered heritage of Bengal to illustrate how tradition is a result of strategic selection by those in power. -- $c Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 319-356) and index. 505 0 $a Invoking the Goddesses -- Mapping the Terrain -- ManasÄ -- Caá¹á¸Ä« -- á¹¢aá¹£á¹hÄ« -- Laká¹£mÄ« -- Conclusion. 650 0 $a Hindu goddesses $z Bengal. $z Bengal. 650 0 $a Male domination (Social structure) $z Bengal. $z Bengal. 650 0 $a Women's rights $x Religious aspects. 650 0 $a Women $z Bengal $z Bengal $x Social conditions. 650 0 $a Male domination (Social structure) 650 7 $a Hindu goddesses $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01729905 650 7 $a Male domination (Social structure) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01741391 650 7 $a Worship (Hinduism) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01181459 651 7 $a India $z Bengal $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01213579 776 08 $i Online verion: $a Sengupta, Saswati. $t Mutating goddesses $b First edition. $d New Delhi : Oxford University Press, 2021 $z 9780190993269 $w (OCoLC)1227646892 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240217011638.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=56369310CD6211EE9507C16149ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
