Ironically, the Bill of Rights, enacted in 1689 to address abuses by the Crown, was successfully invoked in the twenty-first century to curb perceived abuse by Government, acting in the name of the Crown. Passed shortly after the Glorious Revolution, the Bill of Rights sets out the balance of power between Parliament and the Crown, prohibiting the sovereign from levying taxes, recruiting troops, or suspending laws without Parliamentary consent. Establishing Parliament as the ultimate source of power in the land and enshrining basic civil rights first set out in Magna Carta but subsequently abridged, the Bill document can justly claim to serve as the origin of Britain's democracy. In this edition, an introduction by Jonathan Sumption provides the historical context of the document and its influence over the centuries--particularly on the United States Bill of Rights. -- $c Provided by publisher. 610 10 $a Great Britain. $t Bill of Rights 610 10 $a Great Britain. $t Bill of Rights $x History. 630 07 $a Bill of Rights (Great Britain) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01361099 650 0 $a Civil rights $z England. 650 0 $a Civil rights $z Wales. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Succession. $x Succession. 650 7 $a Civil rights. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00862627 650 7 $a Democracy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00890077 651 7 $a Great Britain. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204623 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 $a Sumption, Jonathan, $e writer of introduction. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240619010821.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=4C54D85C2E0111EFA856D47D28ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
