Im ersten Schritt werden aus den grundlegenden Konzeptionen ästhetischer Autonomie (Karl Philipp Moritz, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Schiller, Friedrich Schlegel und Novalis) Kernmerkmale des ästhetisch Autonomen abgeleitet. Die Untersuchung betrachtet MERZ daraufhin vor der Folie dieser Merkmale und zeigt, dass Schwitters zentrale Impulse des autonomieästhetischen Diskurses einerseits fortschreibt und andererseits einlöst. Verschiedenste Texte/Artefakte des ?Allround?-Künstlers rücken dabei in den Blick. Im Ergebnis steht die Erkenntnis, dass das Verhältnis von ?ästhetischer Autonomie? und ?historischer Avantgarde? ? von Schwitters ausgehend ? als genealogisch zu denken ist.
