Summary:
With a new text by Marc Mayer, this exhibition catalog honors the life and work of New York-based painter Thomas Nozkowski (1944-2019), featuring the artist's final works. The 15 paintings featured here continue Nozkowski's use of rich color and his abstract visual language that related to personal memories or experiences of the world. Mayer recounts his own personal experiences with the work and details Nozkowski's approach to pictorial abstraction, one that involved the nuances of feeling rather than confident identification to achieve his oeuvre, or what the writer calls "a record of creative thought." The catalog also includes a eulogy for Nozkowski written by Peter Schjeldahl, which was delivered at a memorial for the artist at MoMA in February 2020. Photographs of the artist in his studio and in nature illuminate his process of creating these vibrant and important works.
