Summary:
"The lifeboat drills the passengers had been through had not been a waste of time. As the ship's whistles blasted six short signals followed by one long bell- the warning to abandon ship- the passengers who were able to move were hastened to their assigned lifeboat stations. Some tried to return to their cabins to get their lifebelts. Others grabbed lifebelts they found scattered about the deck. Alexander steered Russell to his station, hoping to see Rebecca there. When she didn't appear, Alexander told his son he was going to her cabin. He directed Russell to get into a lifeboat as soon as the crew allowed loading. Then Alexander disappeared below the darkness of the ship's interior. Russell was alone." -- cover page 4.
