Summary:
In Harry Turtledove's work of historical fiction, Augustus Caesar assigns Roman politician Publius Quinctilius Varus three battle legions and presents him with orders to combat the united, yet barbaric Germanic forces in Rome's eastern frontier, Rhine. But, unbeknownst to Caesar and Varus, Prince Arminius of Cherusci, a Roman citizen and former soldier, has joined forces with the Germans in hopes of leading them to victory over Rome in the bloody Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
