Sinusitis and rhinitis can worsen asthma. Treatment of these conditions can improve asthma. A literature review of studies related to the common treatment, epedemiologic, pathologic, and physiologic characteristics of these diseases was conducted. Eighteen studies that corresponded to the aim of this review were selected. The findings were then summarized and conclusions were made. The literature demonstrated that eosinophilic inflammation is common to the upper and lower airways. There was strong radiographic evididence of sinusitis in patients with severe asthma. In addition epedemiologic findings strongly correlate worsening asthma with the presence of severe rhinitis/sinusitis, and studies demonstrated that treatment of these conditions had significant beneficial effects in mild asthma. A teaching plan was developed by developed based on Knowles' learning theory.
