In August 1977, Jane Newell moved out of her childhood home in Sioux City, Iowa, to teach school in Little Missouri on the western edge of South Dakota. The minute her mother saw the town of 92 people and heard about the hit-and-run murder that orphaned one of Jane's new students, she begged Jane to return to the nest in Iowa. Intrepid, Jane steadfastly faced her new life among the zany characters surrounding her -- from her neighbor Merle Laird and his prize cow Snippy to the glitter-hating school janitor, Velma. In such a small town, she began her new life knowing that someone close to her was undoubtedly the killer, and she was determined to find out who it was. Includes a recipe for Merle Laird's Non-Skid Pancakes.
