Summary:
Camino Fernandez is a sunny young Spanish fifth-grader from Madrid. She is a typical pre-teen: constantly daydreaming, chatting with her best friend Begoäna during choir practice, wanting to join the local theatre group so she can star as Cinderella in their final production, and beginning to be intrigued by Begoäna's cute cousin Cuco. But her mother Gloria--a fervent member of Opus Dei--controls the family's daily lives, which are strictly regulated and filled with prayer. When Camino is diagnosed with a rare cancer of the spine, her mother becomes obsessed with the possibility of Camino being canonized. When an operation to remove the tumor fails, and nothing can be done to save her daughter's life, Gloria happily urges Camino to offer her pain to God.
