The 1st work was "published as a [violin and piano] duo, but was intended to be a trio. In the published version, the pianist mutes the strings with the fingers to simulate the sound of the drum. In the original recording, however, issued with Cowell's approval ... [some] movements ... were performed by the violinist and a drummer"--Booklet, page 3; the 3rd-7th works for piano; the 9th work for clarinet and piano; the last work for violin, percussion, and piano.
