This work is Part 2 of Heggie and Scheer's three-part opera, Out of darkness. Commissioned by Music of Remembrance. Premiered in Seattle, May 2013. Libretto by Gene Scheer comprised of poetic translations of Polish lyrics by Krystyna Zywulska, who wrote the lyrics while imprisoned at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
