"What links can we establish between imagination and the power of knowledge of literature? This work answers this question by investigating the decisive period of 1924-1948 in France. The author reconstructs the theoretical foundations of the romantic imagination and its dialectic with the hermeneutical novelty of the social sciences, in the context of the crisis of legitimation that literature went through in the interwar period. By closely studying the texts of André Breton, Gaston Bachelard, Roger Caillois, Armand Petitjean and Jean-Paul Sartre, the author demonstrates the existence of a 'moment' for the concept of imagination and analyzes the strategies that these authors deploy in order to preserve, by this concept, a space of epistemological autonomy for literature." --back cover
