Summary:
"As Floyd Romaine Crary traveled around the country beginning 6 December 1853, looking for the best paying job opportunities, he wrote letters to his family in Rockford, Illinois. He described people, places and events of the day. To mother, Mary Maria Holbrook Crary Jones, he talked about politics both local and national unfolding around him. To younger sister, Aurelia, he also sent humor, word plays, and samples from property of the ... famous for her collection of pressed flowers. He was present during the organization of the Minnesota Territory toward statehood, and in Illinois and Ohio as the nation teetered on the brink of Civil War. He joined the war effort first as a civilian Hospital Stewart at General Hospital No. 5 in Louisville, KY, then as a general Relief Agent with the U.S. Sanitary Commission, traveling with the troops all the way to Atlanta. Transferring to Wilmington, N.C., with the Office of Commissary, he remained there until after the end of the war. Two hundred sixty four letters are transcribed in this volume, the last dated 14 February 1866"--Back cover.
