Notes:
"The type is Perpetua Italic, hand set and printed letterpress on vintage handmade Charter Oak."-- Colophon. "This broadsheet was created especially for the benefactors & patrons of The Sun Valley Writers' Conference for 2019, celebrating 25 years. 'To Paula in Late Spring' honors the memory of Paula & William Merwin, both Founders' Circle members. Design & execution are by Carolee Campbell at Ninja Press."-- Colophon. "The ensō or empty circle decorating the broadsheet is an iconic image in Zen Buddhist art and perhaps the most common subject of Zen calligraphy. ... It is appropriate that I used the ensō as the single visual image to accompany William's poem. William was a practitioner of Zen Buddhism. It was his Zen practice that led him to Hawaii to study with Zen master Robert Aitkin Roshi in the 1970's. ... I have set the type for the broadsheet by hand and dampened the paper before printing it letterpress on a Vandercook Universal I flatbed proof press at Ninja Press in Sherman Oaks, California" --Printer's description sheet. Printed on light green vintage handmade Charter Oak paper with poem letterpress printed in black ink; ensō depiction and Colophon letterpress printed in light green ink. Special Collections copy Issued with descriptive sheet from the printer, titled "A Word about the Broadside for 2019." IaU
