Summary:
A ten year old with a fascination for airplanes grows up in a home with an abusive father. He decides to enlist the help of a mildly retarded friend to help him build an airplane so that he can fly his mother to the hippie commune she so desperately desires to join. Just before the plane is complete, the child's mother makes a bold decision and drives the two of them to California. The friend decides to test the plane anyhow and crashes. The child returns to his hometown as an adult to see whatever became of his friend and his father.
