Summary:
Luke Lilavelt has built his Window Sash brand into a cattle empire using methods to add to his holdings that have been bloody and only marginally within the law. For the last several years this has been accomplished largely through Dave Wall, who has been acting as Lilavelt's trouble-shooter. Wall's reputation has suffered considerably by his association with Lilavelt, but Dave Wall has been motivated by blackmail.
Jerry Connell, married to Wall's sister and the father of three children, has been building his ranch into a successful enterprise. Luke Lilavelt has a Wanted poster naming Connell as a fugitive from New Mexico. If Wall were to refuse to do Lilavelt's bidding, Lilavelt will expose Wall's brother-in-law, destroying Jerry Connell's life and that of his wife and children.
When Wall is sent into the Crimson Hills country to ruin rancher Bart Sutton so Lilavelt can take over Sutton's Square S Ranch, he saves Sutton's life instead. Then comes the explosion. Jerry Connell is arrested and Wall becomes Lilavelt's worst enemy.
