Summary:
The Wabash River Valley, during Prohibition. Caroline Case, a madame, became an amateur detective after the murder of her friend Alec in 1921. With her friend Hannibal Jones, her "girls" and an odd assortment of local characters, they investigate a few murders, but get no help from the authorities, who are on the take from gangsters who control the booze trade in the Valley. Over time they become involved in the war between Al Capone and the North Side Gang. As Caroline accumulates wealth from investments in both non-legitimate and legitimate businesses, she records in her diary the stories of the gang wars, adventures, and color characters she meets. -- adapted from back cover
