Summary:
Lt. John Dungar, a decorated Civil War officer, wants to see the American frontier before it is gone. Assigned to an abandoned fort, he overcomes language and mutual distrust to become friends with a Sioux tribe. He learns the culture of the Sioux, lives with them and falls in love with a white woman raised by the tribe. His knowledge of the fate which will ultimately befall his friends torments him and he is faced with a crucial decision which determines his destiny.
